HIV Testing: OraSure
HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. There is no cure for HIV infection or AIDS. The decision to take an HIV antibody test is a very personal and difficult decision for many people. In the past, a painful blood samples was taken with a large needles for HIV antibody testing.
Fortunately, there is now a painless and non-invasive method to determine if a person has HIV. The OraSure test method is a simple test that takes a liquid sample from the mouth (not saliva) called transudate mucosal fluid. This fluid is taken from between the teeth and cheeks of the mouth by a flat, absorbent swab. The fluid sample is then tested for HIV antibodies and results are usually ready within 10 working days.
The OraSure test can be performed discreetly just about anywhere and is very convenient. Testing does not have to be in a clinic or office. In addition, OraSure testing is more accurate than a blood test.
If a person is infected with HIV, the body produces antibodies to try and fight the virus. People with HIV have this antibody and people without HIV do not. HIV infection progresses towards an AIDS diagnosis over time.
Early detection of HIV is important. Early treatment can mean living much longer before an AIDS diagnosis. Early treatment and understanding what it means to live with HIV can also reduce the spread of the virus through education and awareness interventions.
Testing for sexually transmitted diseases will not detect HIV antibodies. HIV antibody testing is a separate process. Minors do not need parental or legal guardian permission to take an HIV test.
